Eighteen steamship companies operated service between European ports and New York in 1884. The yearly number of trips was 943, down from 972 in 1883. NGL was the leading line providing 105 trips carrying 65,558 steerage passengers. The number of total steerage passengers processed through Castle Garden that year was 320,813. Immigrants were processed at 23 separate immigration and custom houses across the US. A total 463,251 were approved for immigration and another 90,000 were declined.
